This study is to consider the occurrence and background of formation for mourning clothes theory, among origin theory of white clothes phenomenon during Joseon Dynasty. Also, we have compared it with 『Gugjo-oryeui(國朝五禮儀)』, basic principle of national ritual, to make up for omitted parts of study on national mourning clothes from existing mourning clothes theory, and examined 『Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄)』and record of the figure in Joseon Dynasty together, to confirm whether of implementation of rules and recognition for mourning clothes. Suppose the system of national mourning clothes complies with 『Gugjo-oryeui』, it is difficult to define the state funeral as cause of white clothes phenomenon, like opinion of Lee Soo-kwang(李睟光), who famous for advocate of mourning clothes theory. In addition, we should find the relation of white clothes phenomenon and mourning clothes from social awareness. The period when Lee Soo-kwang lived was emphasized mourning clothes system and debated a lot whitening from mourning clothes to even hat, parts of it. It has emphasized the development of the study of courtesy in accordance with deepening study on Neo-Confucianism and mourning clothes system. Including 『Jibong yuseol(芝峯類說)』, work of Lee Soo-kwang, it focuses on utmost condolences in contemporary literature. Mourning clothes system was the measure to fulfill courtesy, and courtesy was the best cultural value at that time. It is likely that Lee Soo-kwang’s remark for generalization of long-time practice on white clothes as mourning clothes is originated from positive thought on white clothes phenomenon. Mourning clothes was recognized as sign to express courtesy, rather than ominous clothes. The pride to fulfill courtesy has become the foundation to generate and support mourning clothes theory. Among origin theory of white clothes phenomenon, mourning clothes system was emphasized to implement mourning clothes theory, mourning⋅funeral custom was settled in accordance with confucian ritualism, and stereotype for mourning clothes as white was interacted as major setting. The pride to apply mourning clothes system was reflected even to ordinary formation and interpretation of white clothes phenomenon.
