Lee Kwang－soo asked the afresh question “what is the literature” in the first line of “Literature lecture” in the mid－1920s. Already, this question was raised by “문학이란 하오 (What is the literature)” about a decade ago in that it isn’t a new question at all. However, when the context of the question changes, its meaning and effect also changes. This paper intends to reveal the intention of the question “What is literature?” which was published by “Literature lecture” and “A trivial talk about literature” on the extension of the former. Furthermore, this paper aims to clarify what it means in the literary circles in those days and what effect it has generated.
Lee Kwang－soo presented the concept of literature in “Literature lecture” and included the decadence literature and the proletarian literature in the ‘literature’. In “A trivial talk about literature”, the works of poets who represent various attitudes and tendencies are considered as the classics of Joseon literature. Through these works, Lee Kwang－soo presented the history of literature. Making the concept of literature literary and establishing the history of literature was the task of making literature specific and irreversible.
