This study seeks to find which factors contribute to the production of complex sentences of L2 written Korean. The participants were sixty L2 learners of Korean whose native languages were English, Chinese, Japanese, and others. Thirty native speakers of Korean were tested as a control grroup to provide ideal language use for learners. A letter span test, a paired associates test, a serial response test, a visual memory test, a spatial memory test, and a phonological memory test was conducted to measure the participants’ executive functioning skills. The participants took a simplified version of Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) as an index of general linguistic proficiency. The learners saw a video and performed a ‘story-retelling’ task as written production test. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to the gathered data to reduce the number of variables. A multiple regression analysis was performed to form a regression model that explains the relationship between measured factors and the use of subordinate clauses. The study showed two major results. First, there is a systematic difference between the use of single subordinate clause and multiple subordinate clauses. Second, the way leaner factors contribute to the production of complex sentences differs by the complexity of sentences. The pedagogical implication of these findings is that explicit classroom learning and the degree of how learners interact with formal sentences are key factors for the development of syntactic complexity of L2 Korean.
