Technically, the investigation and prevention of child exploitation material (CEM) (creation, distribution and consumption) has not advanced much in the last few years. The techniques used are largely the same, but are becoming more fine-tuned and increasingly distributed.
Generally during an investigation investigators are focusing on the automatic detection and classification of child exploitation material (images/videos/stories), as well as trace evidence that may be related to such crimes. Most novel classifiers are attempting to use Artificial Intelligence to determine criminal or related artifacts. These techniques are supported with more classical methods, such as file hashing, content analysis and keyword searching. This work looks at the current state of combating and investigating child exploitation material online.
