The purpose of this study is to examine the socio - cultural background reflected in the dance in the movie. Especially, it focused on the analysis of meaning and symbolism implied in dance. The research subjects are four American movies that are mediated by dance. As a result, the background set in the first movie reflects the socio-cultural background at the time of production. Second, as the meaning and symbol of dance in the film, 〈Red Shoes〉 can be applied to the formula of white = noble = dignity = ballet, 〈Dirty Dancing〉 shows the gap between the rich and poor in the two classes through dancing, through the mambo by the intelligent class and the salsa by the dancers. 〈Showgirl〉 shows the perception that strip dancer = prostitute = uncertainty treats it as a socially low rank. 〈Step Up〉 confirms the social values of hip-hop = poverty = (dance) play = non-art but ballet = wealth = dance (life) = art. As a result, artistic ballet has a high value, and other strip dance, hip-hop, and popular mambo and salsa can be seen as relatively low perceptions. It also reflects the ideology of white-intellectuals = wealthy socio-cultural. In other words, it can be understood that the dance in the film reflects not only the meaning but the sense of socio - cultural value and ideology as the meaning and symbol of each.
