Contemporary semantic studies are too diverse to grasp in a simple way, but Formal Semantics and Cognitive Semantics are usually considered as two major semantic theories. This paper aims to understand the present state of semantic studies. To the end, the paper reviews previous semantic studies and discusses their effects on contemporary semantic studies. In particular, it is very important to understand the works of Philosophy of Language because of their huge effect on the studies of linguistic semantics, including Formal Semantics and Pragmatics. On the other hand, I examine the division between Semantics and Pragmatics, suggesting that it cannot be clear cut and they should be complement to each other, which is predicted from a historical consideration of Pragmatics. I conclude the paper with the discussion of various semantic theories from viewpoints of externalism and internalism. The former accepts meaning as the intentional relation between language and things. In contrast, the latter rejects it, considering meaning to be from non-intentional relations between language and mental structures like concepts.
