The Long Dream is Richard Wright’s last novel, written while he was in France, detailing Fishbelly’s efforts to overcome the violence of castration committed to black people. Unlike his other novels showing direct violent revenge against white people, Wright has Fishbelly overcome his fear of violence through a sexual relation with white women. Fishbelly is afraid of sexual intercourse with white women after watching Chris Sims castrated under the Jim Crow law which prohibits miscegenation. However, he longs for the sexual intercourse because it is the means by which he can recover from his identity crisis. Fishbelly chose exile from his Southern town and fled to France in search of freedom and equality. Although Fishbelly established self-identity, some critics denounced the development of self-awareness of Fishbelly in The Long Dream because it seems to mirror Wright’s own excuse to flee to France. However, escaping to France is the only choice for Fishbelly because if he remained in America, he would persue money and sex as his father did. Through Fishbelly’s sexual initiation and escape to France, Wright tried to reveal his dream of a world without racial discrimination and violence.
