The purpose of this study is to re-read Gulliver’s Travels, in terms of fantastic discourse by examining the significance and the role of fantasy. Gulliver’s Travels is a satire that examines four aspects of human beings, and it is, at the same time, a brilliant fantasy. On the surface, this book is witty and comical, but at its center lies tragedy from historical and political perspectives. Swift wanted to transcend the desperation of social reality through his fantasy novel. In reality, the main character in the text finds himself helplessly trapped in social discontinuity. He has no hope of escaping from his anxiety about the problems of the world, including his unstable future. Fantasy serves to fulfill the demand for freedom and provides hope to people including himself. Through this process, readers can also escape from the miserableness of reality through the fantasy. In a fantasy novel, the uncertain vision of the main character is spread to the reader through the integration of the narrator and the main character. In particular, considering the historical conflict between Ireland and Britain, fantasy can be a very effective means of helping readers alleviate their irrational suffering, enabling them to reflect on their conduct by confronting the practical problems they have.
