Many leisure researchers argue that patterns of leisure behavior should be examined from the life-span perspective and integrated in terms of an individual`s movement across life from one stage to another. Within this cycle, there re qualitatively different seasons, each having its distinctive characters. Adults` need for leisure varies with life stages. Thus, adult development is considered as the evolution of the life structure which evolves through a relatively orderly sequence. Life-span provides a context for understanding age differences in leisure behavior, especially when it is broken into theoretically meaningful stages. It can be argued that leisure for adults is intertwined with all aspects of life rather than a separate entity and must be investigated in relation to work, family, social role, sex, and other psychological variables as well as age. The determinants of leisure behaviors were investigated as a function of successive developmental periods of life-span for male adults. The purpose of the present study was to answer the following two questions: 1) How do aggregate patterns of leisure behavior vary as a Function of the developmental periods in the adult life-span? 2) How do intrapersonal patterns of change in leisure behavior vary as a function of the developmental periods in the life-span? In this study, life was divided into three "seasons" : early adulthood (24-43), middle adulthood (44-64), and late adulthood (65 or older). Thus, the challenge for leisure researchers and practitioners is to incoporate and account for the complex process of male adults` development and leisure in leisure delivery. According to our analyses, it was found that male adults demonstrated different levels of behavioral participation, preferences, needs, attitudes, and competency in terms of physically active leisure defending upon the life-cycle stages. Within the limitations of the cross-sectional nature of the data, the findings suggest that the number of people starting new activities declined with advancing adult life stages. It is noteworthy that the result generally contradicted the previous findings which suggested that the replacement tendency declines with advancing life stages. In conclusion, the challenge for leisure researchers and practitioners is to determine how to accomodate the complex process of development and leisure in adulthood. These results are discussed in light of existing research on age, family, and leisure service delivery.
