This paper aims at throwing light on the philosophical relationship between Hwaŏm Buddhism and “Auguries of Innocence” by William Blake, focusing on the Diagram of the Dharmadhātu According to the One Vehicle of Hwaŏm, by Uisang. Special attention was given to understanding the world view in the first four lines of “Auguries of Innocence” in terms of cosmology of the Diagram which contains the following phrases: “In One is All,/ In Many is One... In one particle of dust,/ Is contained the ten directions... And a single thought-instant/ Is identical to incalculably long eons.”
The idea of mutual identity (相卽), mutual inclusiveness (相入, interpenetration), Dependent Origination (緣起), emptiness (空), and the totality (總體性) in the Diagram was discussed in its historical context, tracing its origin from the sayings of Gautama Buddha to The Avataṃsaka Sūtra, based on the Diagram. These ideas were applied to the understanding of the first four lines, finally to prove that they share the similar ideas and attitudes toward the human world in which suffering and false view is prevalent. The common vision between the two can be summarized as “Perception of oneness of all beings can lead to the wisdom of overcoming the ego-centricity, conflicts in life and the realization of peaceful co-existence in the present life, namely, the realization of Heaven on earth.
