Public library is a place where anyone can gain knowledge and information regardless of user characteristics, and it also offers various resources for culture and leisure. The role of public library is changing as a center for diverse cultural activities, and for this to happen, directions should be provided based on various fields of research. The purpose of this study is to analyze the articles on the space design of public libraries, and understands the changing trends of research according to the social condition. This study was conducted with a qualitative analysis using the literature research method, and statistical analysis was applied partly. 120 articles from domestic academic journals were collected and analyzed by the published journals, keywords, contents of research, and research methods. The results are as followings; 1) The academic journal trend was initially focused on engineering field, but gradually diversified and expanded to complex fields and arts-sports field. 2) The main topics and contents were mostly related to the physical environments, but they were gradually diversifying into non-physical elements with the revision of the Library Law in 2006. 3) In terms of the research methods, case studies with literature data were the most common methods. In order to present new concepts for the ever-changing social role of public libraries, diverse and converged approaches to the research are necessary, and furthermore, continuous research is need to improve the awareness and active functions of public libraries as the center of creative culture.
