본 논문에서는 다문화 문식성을 함양하기 위한 소설교육에서 공감적 상상력이 매우 중요한 요소라는 점을 전제로, 다문화 소설 속 공감의 양상을 살펴보고 이를 통한 다문화 소설의 교육 방안을 고찰하였다. 다문화 문식성은 다문화 사회의 다양한 문화적·사회적 맥락을 이해하고, 그러한 이해를 기반으로 공동체 내의 소통능력을 키우는 것이며, 나아가 지식과 기술을 실천적인 영역까지 끌어올리는 인지적, 정의적, 행동적 차원을 아우르는 개념이다. 소설은 다양한 인간의 삶을 다층적으로 형상화한 서사 장르로서, 공감적 상상력을 바탕으로 타자 및 세계에 대한 이해, 그리고 자기 성찰을 가능하게 한다. 이러한 공감(empathy)은 다문화 교육의 목표인 다문화적 역량 및 다문화 문식성 함양에 매우 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있다. 공감은 다양하게 정의될 수 있지만 “우리로 하여금 다른 사람의 처지에 우리를 놓음으로써 다른 사람을 이해해가는 과정”으로 동감이나 동정과는 다른 것이다. 그러므로 타자의 문제를 간접 경험할 수 있게 하는 소설은 타자와의 공감을 확장시키며, 이를 통해 다문화 문식성을 신장시킬 수 있다. 본고에서는 다문화 사회의 다양한 공감의 과정을 담아내고 있는 김연수, 정이현, 최은영의 소설을 통해 다문화 문식성 교육의 가능성을 모색하였다. 김연수의 소설 모두에게 복된 새해-레이먼드 카버에게 는 낯선 이방인과의 공감의 과정을 다루고 있다. 이 소설은 주류 자국민과 소수의 이방인이라는 위계적 구도에서 벗어나 개인과 개인이 어떻게 소통하고 공감해야 하는지를 보여준다. 이 소설을 통해 학습자들은 타자를 향한 진정한 소통의 자세와 공감의 과정에 대하여 성찰할 수 있다. 또한 정이현의 영영, 여름 에서는 작은 공감이 소외된 이들을 ‘우리’로 변모시킬 수 있음을 보여준다. 국가와 민족, 계급과 성별, 신체적 표지 등은 경계 혹은 배제와 차별의 조건으로 작용하기 쉽다. 그러나 진정한 공감은 이러한 경계를 유연하게 넘나들 수 있는 가능성이 되기도 한다. 최은영의 씬짜오 씬짜오 는 다른 두 소설과는 달리 타자와의 소통과 공감이 얼마나 힘든 것인가를 잘 보여준다. 독일이라는 낯선 타지에서 만난 두 가족은 이방인으로서 서로에게 공감하지만, 베트남 전쟁이라는 역사적 상처 때문에 갈등을 겪게 된다. 서로의 입장이 타자에게 강요될 때, 그것은 폭력으로 자리바꿈을 하며, 그 폭력에 의해 환대와 공감은 깨어질 수 있다. 우리 모두는 개인인 동시에 가족의 구성원이며, 국가에 소속된 존재들이기에 진정한 공감을 위해서는 서로의 상황과 환경 역시 이해해야 한다. 학습자들은 이러한 소설들을 읽음으로써 타자와의 공감이 지닌 복합적인 층위를 이해할 수 있으며, 진정한 공감을 위해 필요한 자세를 배울 수 있을 것이다.

On the premise that empathic imagination is an essential element in novel education to foster multicultural literacy, this study inquired in to the aspects of empathy in multicultural novels and considered education plans for multicultural novels based on such features. Multicultural literacy is a concept encompassing cognitive, affective an d behavioral spheres allowing the understanding of diverse cultural and social contexts of a multicultural society and development of communication abilities in the community based on this understanding, and rise of know ledge and technology towards the practical area. Novels are a genre of narrative fiction which shapes a variety o f h u m an life in a multifarious manner, allowing the understanding of others and the world as w ell as self reflection based on empathic imagination . This empathy plays a crucial role in fostering multicultural competency and multicultural literacy aimed by multicultural education . Empathy can be defined in many ways, but it is clearly different from agreement or compassion in the sense that it is “a process of understanding others by placing yourself in their situation . Therefore, novels allowing you to in directly experience the problems of others contribute to expanding empathy with others and raise multicultural literacy based on this.
This stud y sought possibilities of multicultural literacy education based on novels o f Kim Yeon - su , Jung Ih yun and Choi Eun - young expressing the process of empathy of a multicultural society. The novel of K im Yeon-su “Happy New Year to Everyone - To Raymond Carver” describes the process of empathy with strangers. This novel show how people should communicate with one another and create empathy together escaping from the hierarchical structure between the main stream nation a lsanda small number o f foreigners. This novel makes it possible for the learners to reflect on the true communication attitude and the process of empathy. Besides, the novel of Jung Ihyun “Summer forever” demonstrates the power of small empathy to transform the isolated souls in to “u s.” In general, a state, nation, class, gender or physical signs can easily play a role as conditions of boundary, exclusion and discrimination . However, true empathy provides possibilities of overcoming this boundary with flexibility. Un like these two novels, the novel of Choi Eun - young “X in ch àox in ch ào ” manifests how hard it is to communicate and create empathy with others. Two families, who had lost their respective family members by the Vietnam War, sympathize with one another in the foreign land but both go through conflicts due to the historical wound of the Vietnam War. When one’s position is forced to others, it is transformed in to violence and hospitality and empathy can be broken by the violence. Since each one of us is not only an individual and a member of a family but also members belonging to a state, it is required to understand situation and environment of others for true empathy. These novels will help the learners to comprehend the complex levels and dimensions of empathy with others, and learn how to build attitudes required for true empathy.
