At a nursing home for the elderly, the elderly in need of nursing need to spend their day indoors due to geriatric illness, etc. In reality, however, it is challenging to meet such a variety of characteristics and needs of individual occupants properly within the uniform space of living. Accordingly, this study aims to improve color environments by means of textile design in an effort for environmental improvement of nursing homes for the elderly in recognition of the importance of indoor environment welfare. Specifically, this study analyzes existing researches on interior colors in relation to the characteristics of the elderly as part of its theoretical investigation, and develops textile designs based on the findings in order to suggest color environments appropriate for the elderly in need of nursing. To this end, blue natural indigo is utilized in consideration of its eco-friendly features, such as deodorizing, heat insulation, and mothproof effects, as well as stress alleviating and mental/physical stabilizing effects. Textile design is developed specifically for the space of private living to improve its color environments and thus create pleasant living environments. It is expected that the proposed method can contribute to the welfare of the elderly at the point of becoming an aging society, and that the findings can be utilized in relation to the color environments of nursing homes for the elderly to be built in the future.
