Vehicle lighting technologies are rapidly growing to satisfy consumer needs, with more emphasis being put on main interior lighting such as room lamps, mirror lamps, and personal lamps. Meanwhile, lighting for buttons which play functional roles have unclear luminance criteria for their characteristics, despite the fact that they are color lighting. There also has not been research to understand the adequate traits of such button lighting based on visibility. Button lighting must consider the convenience of users depending on glare, brightness, visibility, and other adequate standards, and the range must be clearly stated. The current study takes automobiles in the market to confirm trends in luminance of their button lighting based on psychological scales, in order to use the resulting information as basic data to propose criteria for button lighting luminance. The results are as follows: First, minimal Rheostat luminance occurred within the range of 0.16 to 1.47 cd/m2. For the A Model_R by Company A, it was evaluated to be "very dark," and most other models did not fall into the allowed range. As such, the minimal Rheostat range must be raised for the visibility of the buttons. The second Button lighting in the K Model_R by Company K, the G Model_W by Company H, and the G Model_W by Company V satisfied glare, brightness, and visibility criteria in middle and maximum Rheostat. For white, buttons were included in the luminance range of 3.76 to 24.04 cd/nr1, and for red, the luminance range of 1.07 ~ 5.54 cd/rrr*. As such, when adjusting the Rheostat of button lighting based on color, the luminance range included in the allowed range must be reviewed.
