This study investigates referring expressions in different news sections of contemporary English online news articles and gives a pragmatic account for their grammatical deployment. It covers referring expressions referred to in five news sections: politics, business, science, arts and entertainment, and sports. It focuses on accessibility hierarchy of coreference referring to public figures in different news sections by pragmatic factors: mention order, paragraph order, distance between coreference, and their distributional properties. This corpus-based analysis confirms that full name, the least accessible, is most preferred for the first mention/paragraph; for the subsequent reference, pronoun is most preferred when it is retrieved in the most accessible position, while surname is most preferred when it is retrieved in a relatively less accessible position, following accessibility marking scale. It is implied that the use of referring expressions for public figures in English news sections is linguistic, text-dependent, and news section-independent rather than extralinguistic, context-dependent, and news section-dependent.
