This paper explores lexical bundles in research article English abstracts in the field of applied linguistics. After three-, four-, and five-word lexical bundles were automatically extracted based on two metrics such as frequency and Mutual Information (MI) score, the identified bundles were classified into structural and functional classification, and then these bundles were connected to moves of the research article abstracts. The finding that there were many lexical bundles shared between the ‘Abstracts’ in this study and the ‘Introductions’ in an earlier study may reflect similar move patterns of these, and the exclusive function of bundles in MI order indicates that these can be specific signals of moves of abstracts. Structurally and functionally, the highest frequency of ‘NP + of-phrase’ and ‘Framing’ was confirmed again, suggesting that these are common features regardless of specific academic disciplines and part-genres. A relatively large number of ‘NP + VP’ and ‘Metadiscourse & Topic introduction’, and a combination of moves frequently occurring in a sentence may be because of the nature of abstracts. The repetitive use of ‘this paper *’ and ‘implications’ seems to show preferences by community members. The findings of this study have some pedagogical implications.
