To represent naked truth was the aim of Ranke’s historical writing. It is onesided, however, to argue that he rejected all kinds of literary historical writing. Some of Ranke’s texts critical of the rhetorical writings of history should be interpreted in their context. If we read Ranke’s works carefully, we would come to a conclusion that he accepted the rhetoric as techné. He was a professional historian seeking for naked truths. On the same time, he was a historical writer who strives to represent the past vividly. For that reason he adopted rhetorical techniques, though limitedly.
More important thing of Ranke’s historical narrative, however, was consideration on different dimensions of time. His aim was to implement an integrative historical writing. Thus, he strived to find the great moments in which the dimension of events, of the middle-ranged history, and of the structural history meet with each other. Moreover, he described the activities of the passionate historical individuals and their meaning in the great moments of development.
