The purpose of this study was to investigate the whitening and anti-wrinkle effects of hot water extract of black Platycodon grandiflorum. The DPPH free-radical scavenging activity of black P. grandiflorum extract was 66.4%, which was about 2.1 fold higher than that of raw P. grandiflorum. Elastase inhibition rate was increased from 14.6 to 51.4% when extract concentration of black P. grandiflorum was increased from 200 to 800 μg/mL. Collagenase inhibition rate was increased from 10.8 to 43.9% when extract concentration was increased from 200 to 1,000 μg/mL. When the extract concentration of black P. grandiflorum was increased from 200 to 1,000ug/mL, the tyrosinase inhibitory rate was sharply increased from 15.7 to 48.3%. However, in the case of over 1,200 μg/mL, it did not increase.
The result demonstrated that hot water extract of black Platycodon grandiflorum could be a possible candidate for functional food and beauty cosmetics such as whitening and wrinkle-improving materials.
