This study is about the “robe” of the characters depicted in the illustration of the Jami" al-tawarikh in the collection held in the Edinburgh University Library. In other words, this study aims to analyze “robe” types, styles and formative characteristics, and to discuss their ethnographic characteristics and the background and circumstances of their creation. We selected 70 illustrations from the second volume of the world history in the Jami" al-tawarikh for analysis. We analyzed the illustrations according to the status and class of the characters and then we reviewed and classified the types of costumes worn by each character. Based on the results, we discussed the ethnographic characteristics of the types of robes by reviewing earlier studies, books in museum collections, and information on physical artifacts and paintings. In particular, we focused on the fact that the Ilkhanate system applied the dual costume system to Mongolians and West Asian peoples in the 13th and 14th centuries, and this is clearly proved by the robes of the characters. The robes depicted in the illustrations are divided into typical Mongolian robes and Islamic (Arab style) robes that contain the characteristics of the costumes of nomadic tribes in Arabic regions and Central Asia.
