This paper introduces four theories on the historical Adam. First, it is the Theistic Evolutionism that attempts to apply scientific evidence to the biblical interpretation, emphasizing evolutionary theory. In my view, there are some who claim to be evangelicals while claiming the evolutionary theory, but until now, according to major evangelical definitions, the evolutionary theory seems to be incompatible with evangelical redemptive doctrine. Second, unlike the Theistic Evolutionary theory, the First Homo Sapiens Theory(FHST) or the Neolithic Farmer Theory(NFT) are the theories that try to harmonize Genesis with the research in paleo-anthropology without neglecting the scientific evidence. But the FHST that the first Homo sapiens would be Adam 150-200 thousand years ago can not account for the continuity of culture and stone tools between Homo sapiens and other species of Homo before it. Third, the NFT also does not completely make Genesis compatible with paleo-anthropological studies. First of all, there is a challenge that we must acknowledge the Pre-Adamites Theory, and it could also be interpreted that Adam is not the ancestor of mankind, but the ancestor of those who believe in God, and even the ancestor of Jews. Fourth, the creation science prevalent in the Korean church is being criticized for being biased to a literal interpretation of the Genesis text. Creation scientists cannot avoid the accusation of anti-intellectualism by literally interpreting Adamic account in Genesis 2. Neither theory can fully harmonize the record of Genesis with modern paleo-anthropological studies. The FHST and NFT can harmonize the research of paleo-anthropology with the biblical interpretation to some extent. Therefore, we should be humble and full of brotherly love in the discussion of historical Adam.
