The purpose of this study was to compare differences in physiological peak variables and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) during maximal exercise test using a treadmill and an arm ergometer in an able-bodied group (AB), spinal cord injured athlete group (SCIA), and a spinal cord injured sedentary group (SCIS). Thirty six men with SIC (age range, 23-36y) and forty age-matched AB controls participated in this study. Body composition and VEpeak, HEpeak, RERpeak, and VO2peak during an incremental treadmill and arm ergometer test were measured. In VEpeak, SCIA and AB during an arm ergometer test were significantly higher than in AB during a treadmill test. Also, SICS was significantly lower than AB during an arm ergometer test and AB during a treadmill test groups. In HRmax, SCIA and AB during a treadmill test were significantly higher than SCIS and AB during an arm ergometer test. In RERmax, SCIS was significantly higher than SCIA, AB during an arm ergometer test, and AB during a treadmill test. In VO2peak per body weight, SCIS was significantly lower than SCIA, AB during an arm ergometer test, and AB during a treadmill test. Also, AB during an arm ergometer test was significantly lower than AB during a treadmill test. In VO2peak per upper lean body mass, SCIA was significantly higher than SCIS, AB during an arm ergometer test, and AB during a treadmill test. Also, SCIS was significantly lower than AB during an arm ergometer test. In VO2peak per total lean body mass, SCIA was significantly higher than SCIS, AB during an arm ergometer test, and AB during a treadmill test. Also, AB during a treadmill test was significantly lower than AB during an arm ergometer test. Therefore, Analyzing VO2peak in consideration of muscle mass may be more appropriate for persons with SCI whose lower extremity muscles are paralyzed and are therefore reduced in mass.
