This article examines the aspects and characteristics of D. H. Lawrence’s postmodern Perspectives on the state, education, and individuals. Lawrence anticipates the main concerns of postmodernism such as the negation of the grand narratives, the fragmentation of subject, and the shift of attention to the other. There are many similarities between Lawrence and postmodernists. Both argue that the grand narrative has lost its credibility, which leads to the decline of the unifying power. The absences of the consequences have the world separated from the life-world and fragmented in consumer society. I will discuss the questions of social change in contemporary societies based on postmodern concerns by drawing on Lawrence’s novels and essays. The examination compared with Foucault’s theory will demonstrate Lawrence has a postmodern view on each domain. For Lawrence and Foucault, knowledge is not neutral or objective but is a product of power relations, and the functions of regulations or disciplines are being and will be further withdrawn from administrators only for efficiency. These mechanical devices follow the principle of optimal performance, maximizing output regardless of individualities. It is time for us to consider the gains and loss of the postmodern innovative thought and integrate the isolated world into the proximity of life in which the aesthetic, cognitive, and moral are interwoven. Lawrence’s works and thoughts can help us to look for an answer to the problems.
