This paper attempts to show that D. H. Lawrence adopts light imagery throughout his poetry as a vehicle of his poetics as well as his major themes. Light image is one of the most commonly used along with image of darkness in Lawrence's poetry and its poetic meaning is powerful in that it reveals the quick of his poetry. This paper reveals the significance of the poetic meaning of light image and its variations such as shimmering, glistening, glimmering, flaming, glowing, and flickering etc. The paper can be summarized as follows. First, Lawrence does not simply describe image of light as some Imagists do. He, as a poet, describes the image to capture and visualize what is invisible, the protoplasm, the essence of creation. The protoplasm is expressed as shimmering image and the poetics of immediacy is adopted to capture the moment of its flickering. Lawrence's body poetics, which is directly related with his concept of “sensual-awareness,” embodies the poetics of immediacy. Second, Lawrence, who perceives phenomena of life as a flux, expresses the flow of life as a flickering and flaming image. He believes primitives, who were not self-conscious, were the ones who were able to view the flickering of life with their sensual-knowledge. Third, Lawrence perceives that life continues after death as, Yang comes out of Yin, and it is expressed through his uses of light imagery. In conclusion, image of light and its variations expresses itself in the poetics and themes of D. H. Lawrence's poetry which makes his poetry unique and powerful.
