The purpose of this study is to look into the meaning of death portrayed in 「MC 14’22”Ceci est mon corps」, the work in which Angelin Preljocaj first performed in 2001. Thanatos is a psychological term introduced by Sigmund Freud(1856~1939) that signifies instinct towards death. This was the original subject and starting point of art-creating humans. The work of Angelin Preljocaj shows these tendencies. Especially through the double-sided images, we can see comparisons and symbols of the modern man. It captures scenes of dancer’ movement unified as Siamese twins, images of dancers restraining others with tapes and dancers in pain, scenes of maternity using objet overlaying a grave-like space, and scenes from the 「The Last Supper」portraying corrupted human desires instead of atonement redemption of Jesus. These scenes disclose double-sided images of death that transcend beyond the borders of unconsciousness and consciousness. It conveys the painful weight of one man’ lonesome introspection and struggle on the ultimate question and that named death that consistently presents itself in life. It is also a death-in-life perspective reminding us in life that death is continuously restraining us from not afar. He is deemed as a politician and philosopher who represent this world. Works that asks for philosophic reflection and a choreographic style that tears down the traditional boundary proposes new directions for future dance. The meaning of this study is in grasping Angelin Preljocaj’ choreographic philosophy and style, and applying his work in comprehending the displayed senses and topics of the contemporary era. Hopefully this study can be a stepping stone in diverse interpretations and analysis of his work.
