The purpose of this study is to examine what causes the difference in meaning between ‘-eossten’ and ‘-teon.’ This study reveals that the difference in meaning between ‘-eossten’ and ‘-teon’ is caused by the conflict between the two grammatical morphemes: ‘-eoss-’ and ‘-∅-’. The contextual meaning of ‘-eossten’ can bedifferent depending on whether ‘-eoss-’ (the grammatical morpheme) functions as the past tense or the perfect tense. In addition, both combinations—the combination of ‘-eoss-‘ and ‘-던’ and the combination of ‘-∅-’ and ‘-teon’—can strengthen or expand the contextual meaning of ‘-eossten’ or ‘-teon.’ This change either depends on the way those combinations relate to time adverbs or the meaning relation between the combinations and other clauses in a given sentence. Overall, this study shows that the grammatical morphemes can have different contextual meanings when they combine with different lexical elements in a given sentence. This study is meaningful in that it suggests the importance of distinguishing between the grammatical functions and the contextual meanings in a study of grammatical morphemes.
