Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data needed for the establishment of a new policy, by which roles of emergency room nurses and emergency medical technicians(EMT) could be clarified. Method: This data were collected from 738 nurses and 36 unit managers working in the emergency rooms by using the job analysis questionnaire from September 30 and November 10, 2005. Result: Among the 17 domains of nursing activities, the domain of patient education showed the highest frequency in emergency nurses and that of research, education & consultation was the lowest. And the domain of special care including CPR was the highest urgency, and the perceived competency was the highest in the domain of medication. There were no meaningful differences in the frequency, urgency, significance, and perceived competency according to the type and size of hospital, and whether EMTs are available or not in the hospital. Conclusion: It is necessary that job activities which have higher frequency and significance must be strengthened and expanded in order to improve the quality of emergency nurses. Furthermore, various education program for improving the perceived competency should be developed in the particular domain of nursing.
