Background: Previous studies investigating whether there exists significant relationship between obesity and psychological wellbeing are controversial. Especially the studies tend to focus only on specific targets such as children, adolescents or women. This study was to find out if obesity or personal weight perception affect Body esteem, Self-esteem and depressive symptoms among Korean adults. Additionally the study examined whether gender moderates the effects. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 240 adults within 20∼59 year olds who are living in Seoul. Height and weight were asked to calculate BMI(Body Mass Index). Also personal weight perception, scales of Body esteem, Self-esteem scale and depressive symptoms were asked. Lastly demographic information was collected. Results: The mean BMI of all respondents was 23.02(sd=3.23) and the proportion of obesity was 24.4%. Obesity had no significant effects on Body esteem, Self-esteem and depressive symptoms and there were no gender differences. Body esteem scores according to weight perception were different significantly, which persons who perceive themselves as overweight more likely to have low Body esteem than those who perceive themselves as normal or underweight. This result corresponded to women, while men who perceive themselves as underweight had low Body esteem. Conclusions: Although the results supports previous studies showing no significant relationship between obesity and psychological wellbeing, larger samples are required to secure its reliability. Future studies are suggested regarding gender differences on body evaluation and potential factors moderating obesity and psychological variables.
