Purpose: This paper was intended to share our concerns from organ donation counseling through reflection about several experiences of organ donation counseling in one tertiary hospital.
Methods: The data consists of several conversation during rgan donation counseling which were recorded. We reviewed previous literature related our cases, and checked the role of the social worker during organ donation counseling.
Results: The cases were as follows: a counseling case related to the consent of minor donors and donation consent of minor families, a counseling case related to mental health protection issues of organ donor, a counseling case about donor’s passive decision making, a counseling case related to needs of the donor’s guardian for organ transplantation, a counseling case of language violence, organ organ trafficking, the donor’s comment suggesting the possibility of organ trafficking during counseling.
Conclusion: In the evaluation of organ donation counseling, some cases were introduced focusing on the patient’s family considering living organ transplantation such as transplant recipients and donors. In addition to organ donation counseling, the social worker may have difficulty in communication with the hospital or Korean network for organ sharing in relation to the evaluation. Further studies will be needed to address these issues.
