The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in motion and the load distribution between the front and back squat. With these purposes in consideration, 8 experienced weight lifters (at least 3 years practice) preformed both front and back squat. In order to analyze the change in motion and the load distribution of the two types of squat the following variables, distance between COM of sacrum and COM of upper bodies, minimum trunk inclination, maximum trunk extension moment, resultant joint moment of the lower extremities, muscle activity were compared. Here are the following results. First, for the distance between COM of sacrum and COM of upper bodies between the two types of squat there was no significant difference. However for the front squat the distance was relatively longer. Second, for the back squat during all the phases the trunk's inclination was smaller. Third, for the maximum trunk extension moment there was no significant difference but for the front squat it tended to be larger. Fourth, the maximum moment for the lower extremities during the back squat for all phases the hip's maximum moment was large. Fifth, during all of the phases the EMG values were higher while preforming the front squat. All things considered, the change in motion and the load distribution are different depending on the squat type. It is concluded that the front squat is effective exercise for developing overall muscles and the back squat is good for developing the quadriceps strengthening and the stability of upper body.
