This paper studies the hair culture of the Joseon Dynasty in terms of historical anthropology. One representative element of Joseon Dynasty hair culture would be its Gache (加髢) wigs. Past academic studies have only taken a systematic look at the roots of gache and identified which styles were in fashion during which of Korea’s historical periods, and thus little attention has been paid to the relationship between social context and political policies and gache and the broader hair culture. In order to provide a greater understanding of the relationship between hair and the people of the Joseon Dynasty, this paper reviews the available classical literature, introduces historical resources, and takes an initial look at such materials. In addition, this paper incorporates a search of many of the literary works created during the dynasty for references to gache and hair. This paper thus is able to supplement information that has been lacking in previous research, and in addition it presents the new information that trade in hair continued until the end of the Joseon Dynasty and on the circumstances that underlie the constant interest that hair attracted among the people of the age.
