This paper analyzes the literary canon of authors and narrative works of Mexican Literature as it is taught currently in some of the public and private universities of Mexico. An overview of the teaching of literature in today’s Mexico is followed by the scrutiny of the B.A. syllabi of Twentieth Century Mexican Literature courses from different universities in the country in order both to indicate the presence and absence of literary works and authors, and to examine in the canon the representation of gender, ethnic, literary genre and linguistic diversity. Our aim is to develop and characterize a census of the literary canon in Mexican universities so as to question and debate its significance and relevance.
