This study aims to investigate the acoustic characteristics of monophthongs in the Jeonnam Suncheon dialect. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted on residents in their 60s and late teens living in Suncheon. The results of the study are as follows: Unlike previous studies, Suncheon dialect speakers have 7 vowel systems(/i, E, a, ə, ɯ, u, o/) regardless of their generation or gender. The young generation of Suncheon speakers entirely pronounced /ㅚ/, /ㅟ/ as diphthong and the older generation mostly pronounced /ㅚ/, /ㅟ/ as diphthong. /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ were not pronounced distinct in every generation. However, the vowel space varies between generation and gender. The phenomenon that /ㅜ/, /ㅡ/ moved toward front and /ㅗ/ moved toward high in the vowel space occurs in only young generation. The phenomenon that /ㅓ/ moved backwards and downwards in vowel space was occurred in young generation and older generation of females. It shows that the phenomenon of /ㅓ/ moving backwards and downwards in vowel space was the trigger for the phenomenon of back vowels chain shifting in Suncheon dialect.
