The Ewha Music Research Institute (EMRI) has been working on a project, “Establishing a database for music education materials of East Asia in Modern Era,” since November of 2011. The project has just been completed and the database’s web site, eMUSICdb.info opened to the public as of November 1, 2014. As EMRI has collected music education materials in one place and built the database, Ewha Music Data Base (EMDB), it has become a useful tool for researchers to start his/her research. It is preliminary yet allows to draw a comprehensive picture of how Western music entered the region and how it was transmitted during the modern era. The reason our Institute dedicated the past three years establish the database for primary music sources of East Asia is that . there has been no modern music database available for research. Understanding modern music of East Asia as a unit, we now discover a variety of unknown facts draw a general overview of modern music of East Asia. In this paper, I will first share some technical and practical challenges that researchers of the EMRI had to deal with in building a database for East Asian Music. Different languages and diverse notational systems of our collected materials prohibit us adopt pre-existing software programs, namely Kallisto, which has been widely used in Europe. In addition, locating a vast array of materials without much prior references will be discussed as another serious issue. Integrative and interdisciplinary methodology applied to locate, collect, and categorize music materials within socio-cultural context will be explored in this section as well. Furthermore, I will draw a comprehensive overview of ‘use and function’ of modern music in Japan, Korea, and China, by taking music textbooks[敎科書] as an example, commonly used and clearly defined category, thus reflect its role in society. With more integrative and dialogic discussion using close network among researchers within and beyond the region, our database will be improved and it will eventually enhance our knowledge of complex and dense history of modern[近代] as we strive to overcome a strictly Western sense of modernity.
