Many children go to ESL countries to study abroad or to follow their family every year. It is largely considered that they can learn English easily in ESL settings. However, many of them face more difficulties than they thought. This case study is focusing on an eleven year old Korean boy who is staying in the US with his family for a year. How he behaves was explored qualitatively to find any factors contributing to his English development in the US. The boy was interviewed in an ethnographical approach. His mother, his two teachers and his tutor was interviewed. In addition, the field notes were made by the researcher. Seven themes emerged from recursive analysis of the data; ‘Motivation full of competitive spirit’,‘Being into sports’, ‘Dan is recognized as a good boy’, ‘They are kind’, ‘He is willing to take risks’, ‘He likes to speak lines like an actor’, ‘There is nothing wrong with asking’. In his case, all the themes converged on enhancing language development. Some principles of causation found in this case explaining the language development could be a lesson to be considered for other elementary children who are moving to ESL countries.
