This work is to explore some aspects of Islamization in perspectiveof traditional Malay legal system. In particular, it attempts to demisethe ambiguity of Islamization in Malay World including MalayPeninsula to a certain degree.
For the aim, in the first place, this study examines the origin anddevelopment of Malay customary laws, such as adat Perpatih and adatTemenggong before the coming of Islam in Malay Peninsula.
Secondly, it surveys the impact of Islam on the traditional Malaylegal systems in Malay Peninsula including Melaka, Pahang, Kelantan,Trengganu, Johor and their transformation after the coming of Islam.
Based upon these examinations in perspective of legal history, thisstudy makes a conclusion as follow: Islamization in Malay Peninsula,which started at Melaka in the beginning of the 15th century, had beengradually and unforcefully progressed in accordance with the attitude ofrakyat(people)of each negeri(state) toward the religion. For its generalestablishment in that society, the Islamization took more than 500 yearsat least. And this process is still ongoing phenomenon in that area.
