This paper deals with differences in expressing modality in three major dialects of Vietnamese. Modality is expressed in natural language through diverse means. Broadly speaking, these can be divided into two major categories: grammatical means (including morphological and syntactic means), and lexical means. In inflectional languages, moods and other dimensions of verbal inflection (tense, aspect, voice, etc.) play a significant functional role in communicating modal meanings. Of course, these languages also resort to other devices such as lexical means—and may use various means of modality simultaneously—but verbal inflection is primary. As a typical isolating uninflected language, Vietnamese offers a paradigm instance of the use of lexical, rather than morphological, devices to express modality. Rather than discussing theoretical analyses, which still remain very controversial, this paper aims instead at a survey and a description of differences in modal devices in the North, the Center and the South of Vietnam. According to the survey, these differences are those of modal particles in the final position and similar idioms, modal expressions, interjections, inserted modal words and particles. This paper comes to the conclusion that understanding modal devices to express modality in the three dialects of Vietnamese is the key for speaking and writing Vietnamese in fluency.
