This article examines factors (includes historical, psychological and linguistic factor) which influence English-loanwords characteristics in Thai and Korean language. According to historical factor, we found that when Thai people were still English illiterate, Thai people used Thai words that were homophone to the particular English words. This characteristic was called “popular etymology”. Whereas when Korea started using English-loanwords, English pronunciation were similar to Japanese-English. That is because English first came in Korean language during Japanese occupied the Republic of Korean. As for psychology factor, the attitude of the English receivers toward English speakers and English-speaking countries influence the use of English-loanwords. It is found that if the receivers have positive attitude toward the English speakers and the English-speaking countries, there exits high possibility of replacing the native words with English. On the other hand, if the receivers have negative attitude, they are likely to invent their own vocabulary rather than to use English-loanwords. For the linguistic factor, it is found that some linguistic features, such as tonal language, agglutinating language, or syllable structure of the language, affect the structure of English words in the Thai and Korea languages. This article illustrates that English words which are a part of Thai and Korean, poses different structure according to each languages. In addition, this article also suggests that we should not call English words in Thai and in Korean as “loanwords” since this may lead to the misunderstanding that loanwords might be a part of our language or a part of English. “Thai words from English” and “Korean words from English” are suggested instead of “loanwords.”
