As English becomes so widespread, English has developed to function as an international language. The expansion and functional change of English as an international language(EIL) requires changes in the needs and goals of students’ learning and accordingly changes in the models of teaching. The purpose of this study was to explore Korean college students' perceptions of EIL in order to reconsider teaching goals for EIL in EFL contexts. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from 224 students enrolled in three Korean universities. The results of the study revealed that the students lacked awareness of the nature of EIL and they still preferred native speaker models for their learning. This paper suggests that teachers focus on increasing intelligibility in students' use of English, while raising their awareness of different varieties of English from the EIL view. The awareness of EIL, then, can enhance their confidence in speaking English and better prepare them for intercultural communication.
