During the one hundred year history of the Korea Evangelical Holiness Church the historiography has shifted from its beginning as a North American holiness mission, through periods of national crisis, and finally on to renewed visions of the church’s identity and mission in the Pacific and world contexts. These shifts in historiography have meant that there is a variety of interpretations of identity and history. Is the church truly indigenous or not? As histories were written on both sides of the Pacific (Korean and North American), how did the changing of historians influence the identity of the church’s ancestors? In the case of Korean converts to Christianity, the initial change was from Dangun to Adam and Eve and Abraham and Sarah. The second change of ancestors is to identify the “founder” of a church or denomination. Each kind of history mission, national, and transpacific presents the role of each nation differently with an aim to change the record of who initiated and who was ultimately responsible for the spread of the Oriental Missionary Society into Korea and beyond. Finally, a recommendation will be made to make a shift toward world history.
