This study analyzed the role of ethnic media focusing on the Korean media of Northern California area in USA. Specifically, this study explored how the Korean media editors had set up the role of Korean media as ethnic media through interviews with Korean media editors. In addition, this study explored how the role of ethnic media would actually be embodied in the contents of newspaper based on the Korea times in US. The results are as follows : 1) Korean media contributed to maintaining Koreans’ cultural identity and protecting rights-and-interests of Koreans in USA. 2) Korean media provided various local information and helped Koreans to adapt in USA. 3) Korean media played a major role in connecting Korean organizations and Koreans and had effect on Koreans’ participation in their communities. 4) Korean media helped Korean community connected with host society. 5) Korean media functioned as a space which revealed Koreans' self-expression and opinion.
