This study discusses both U.S. position on the current maritime territorial disputes in East Asia and policy foundations for Korea to deal with possible developments in those disputes in the near future. Although there is no great probability that Korea and the other countries involved would try to resolve the issues regarding Dokdo and Iedo in military terms, it is also unlikely that the issues will be resolved in other ways soon. U.S. strategies, which are represented by the concepts such as rebalancing or pivot, build on the recognition of the changing nature of the current world politics. Therefore, against future uncertainties, Korea must see the issue in the perspective of complexity, which has already been reflected in the U.S. strategic consideration for East Asia, and work hard to build complex linkages with regard to network politics.
