Minimally invasive surgery, which has been extensively usedto treat gastric adenocarcinoma, is now regarded as one ofthe standard treatments for early gastric cancer, and its suitabilityfor advanced gastric cancer is being investigated. Theuse of cutting-edge techniques for minimally invasive surgeryenables surgeons to deliver various treatment options tominimize a patient’s distress and to maintain oncologic safety. Ongoing multicenter prospective studies aim to validatethe efficacy of these surgical techniques and to expand theindications of minimally invasive surgery for the treatment ofgastric cancer. In this review, we summarize the current statusand issues regarding minimally invasive surgery for thetreatment of gastric cancer. (Gut Liver 2014;8:229-236)
