Background : Activities of Daily Living(ADL) are basic skills that a person must possess in order to care for oneself independently. Satisfaction with ADL cannot be defined by only physical capability to perform ADL. The objective of our study was to investigate the correlation between ADL ability and ADL satisfaction and the different patterns of relationship between ADL ability and ADL satisfaction according to the categories of ADL in selected patients with stroke. Methods : Twenty hemiplegic patients were included in this study. ADL ability was assessed according to the Kenny self care evaluation and ADL satisfaction was assessed using Visual analog scale(VAS). Results : There was no significant correlation between ADL ability and ADL satisfaction if patients were not independent in performing the activity. The satisfaction with locomotion and ascending or descending stairs were lower than other categories of ADL if patient is independent in performing the activity. The satisfaction with toilet activity was the lowest among categories of ADL if patients needed minimal assistance from others in performing the activity. Conclusions : When hemiplegic patients are not independent in ADL activity, subjective ADL satisfaction cannot be anticipated from ADL ability. In addition to ADL ability, ADL satisfaction should be assessed separately in planning the therapy to improve independency in ADL. Korean Journal of Stroke 1999;1(2): 225~230
