This study focuses on a particular type of expression referred to as "formulaic sequences." Researchers note that formulaic sequences are more than strings of words linked together; they are often used to accomplish recurrent communication needs. Formulaic sequences offer processing efficiency because single memorized units, even if made up of a sequence of words, are processed more quickly and easily than the same sequences of words which are generated creatively. The aim of this study is to compare the SL original and TL re-expressions of formulaic sequences during simultaneous interpreting in order to first, find out what formulaic sequences are used at international conferences; second, analyze whether interpreters' rendering of formulaic sequences contribute to enhancing efficiency in processing during SI; and lastly, analyze the implications of such rendering in achieving communication successfully. For the study, authentic data was collected from two international conferences hosted in Seoul. Renderings of interpreters showed formulaic sequences contributed to easing time constraints and cognitive load as well as enhancing the communicative relevance of TL expression.
