The purpose of this study was to survey the high school students' awareness about scientific hypothesis and ability to construct it. One hundred and forty seven tenth graders were surveyed. The results showed that most students were already acquainted with scientific terms such as assumption, hypothesis, prediction and conclusion. They also thought that they knew somewhat or well those. But they were not able to distinguish between hypothesis and prediction, and had difficulties in identifying them in the inquiry examples. The students thought that hypothesis must be constructed based on valid reasons and that hypothesis is variable and imperfect. They were also conscious of the necessity of hypothesis testing. However they had poor awareness about setting up scientific hypothesis containing variables and testable hypothesis. Most students could construct hypothesis about inquiry question. But they could not construct testable hypothesis and set it up using the causal relationship between independent and dependent variables. Furthermore, they could not construct the hypothesis based on valid reasons.
