This study investigated the effect of writing a scientific essay and the factors which influenced the writing a scientific essay. Nine pre-service teachers majored in biology participated in this study. They practiced teaching methods such as discussion, making a essay question, correcting a essay, making the concept map, analysis of problem situations, and wrote scientific essays individually. These essays were analyzed to search for the effect of writing a scientific essay and the factors which influenced the writing a scientific essay depending on teaching methods, and then elaborated in the semi-structured interview. The findings suggested that writing a scientific essay was a helpful method for enhancing creativity as well as writing ability. The writing itself stimulated thinking, especially influenced creative thinking, which was linked to scientific thinking. And the teaching methods influenced differently writing a scientific essay. This means that many kinds of teaching methods are needed to teach writing a essay. After the experiences of writing a scientific essay, pre-service teachers had a positive understanding writing a essay, but they still had difficulty in writing a integrated scientific essay. In addition, pre-service teachers tended to limit essay topics in biology to science-technology and society, bio-ethics, because they thought that controversial issues were appropriated to essay topics.
