NO와 종양의 상관관계에 대한 연구기간이 20여 년이 되었지만 연구결과가 양분되어 있다. 따라서 복잡하다. 어떤 생리활성물질이든 한쪽 방향으로만 기능을 나타내는 것은 거의 없다. NO 역시 주어진 조건에 따라 상반된 기능을 나타낸다. NO의 농도, NO의 생성기간, 생성장소 등에 따라 기능이 달라질 것이다. 종양성장, 발암기전 및 종양면역에서 NO의 역할이 확실하게 밝혀진 것은 많지 않다. 따라서 NO라는 반응성높은 기체에 대해 그 진정한 역할을 찾으려는 새로운 노력을 시작할 때이다. 바야흐로 분자표적의 시대이며 더불어 산화환원반응의 시대이다. ROS, reactive nitrogen species와 종양병태생리와의 관계를 규명할 때이다.
