소화성 궤양은 위장관에서 흔히 관찰되는 병변 중 하나로, 일부에서 출혈이나 천공 등 생명을 위협할 수 있는 합병증을일으킬 수 있다. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) 제균 요법 및히스타민-2 수용체 길항제(H2 수용체 길항제), 양성자펌프억제제의 도입 이후 소화성 궤양의 내과적 치료에 있어서 상당한 개선을 가져왔고, 이로 인한 수술적 치료의 빈도를 줄여주었으나, 일부 국가에서는 천공성 궤양의 발생률과 이로 인한 수술 빈도가 여전히 큰 변화가 없거나 오히려 높게 보고되고 있다[1]. 한국의 경우 천공성 궤양의 발생 빈도는 1990 년대에 비해 2000년 이후 감소한 것으로 보인다.
