Objective : Mast cells, a central component of all allergic disease, are distributed in the skin and the mucosa of gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts and there happen immediate hypersensitivity reaction resulting inflammatory process. Shensuyin(SSE) has been used for the treatment of headache, coughs and much phlegm, especially allergic rhinitis (hay fever) as a traditional medicine in Korea.
Methods : The author examined the effects of Shensuyin (SSY) on mast cell-mediated anaphylactic-like reactions in a murine model.
Results : SSY dose-dependently inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylactic-like shock reaction and ear swelling response. When SSY was given as pre-treatment at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1 ㎎/㎖, the histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells induced by compound 48/80. Mast cells can be activated through different receptors via cross-linkage of the high-affinity IgE receptor. SSY also inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylaxis by oral administration in a dose-dependent manner.
Conclusion : These data provide that SSY may possess a strong anti-anaphylactic activity.
