This paper aims to reveal the photo-historical sens that a korean leading photographer, Hwang Kyu Tae's 1960-70s photographs contains. Starting out as a photo journalist for a korean newspaper, Hwang has produced not only black and white straight photography, but also color composing photography. His photography has very important meaning in korean photo history as followings. First, Hwang's early color-photographs in 1970s has joined in the global world trend toward the subjective tendency of art photography. He did not search for real world which exists before camera and operator, but inner world that exists in operator's mind. Second, Hwang initiatively has realized the artistic value of color photography, in those days considered as commercial media in art world. And then, he has used color photography for the purpose of art photography work. In photo history, William Eggleston was known as the first photographer who held an exhibition of color photography in 1976 at MOMA. But Hwang held his first solo exhibition of color photography in 1973 at Seoul. Third, Hwang's photography was not only subjective, surreal, but also very experimental. For example, his experimental photographic methods were photo-montage, double exposure, film burning, appropriation of existing photos, etc. Therefore, we can situate him as a pioneer of avant-garde photography in korean photo history.
